Engine Block Handling

Application
This application was for a new production line on which an operator would lift and transfer 80 lb. aluminum V6 engine blocks from a machining line conveyor to a pallet.

Business
Automotive OEM - Powertrain

The Challenge
Previously, some operators suffered upper extremity injuries while moving the heavy engine blocks using conventional assist equipment. The challenge was to improve ergonomics and thereby prevent further injuries while allowing the manufacturer to meet its production requirements.

The Solution
Stanley-Cobotics worked with a local integrator to install four (4) iTrolley IAD systems running on the center runway of a KBK bridge crane system. The system uses an Ingersoll-Rand Intelift air balancer to provide the Z-axis up/down movement, and integrates seamlessly with a standard end effector.

Benefits

  • Significantly improved ergonomics
  • Favorable production speeds maintained
  • Simple operation
  • Fast cycle times
  • Operator acceptance
